Reunions this year (2009)
This year it’s the turn of the girls of ’99, ’89 and ’79… to celebrate their time in the Abbey.
We would love to hear from anyone who is organising a reunion this year, and we would really like some stories and photos from these events. You can contact Sian at secretary@laraireland.com.
TopFlower Arranging

On November 19th Loreto Hall St. Stephen’s Green played host to LARA members eager to learn a few tips on flower arranging from Loreto’s own, Sunniva Sheil. Sunniva very kindly offers her time and expertise every year to LARA in order to raise funds for our annual charity, as well as providing a great night out for our members.

This year we learnt the difference a little leaf shine can make to a flower arrangement, as well as how to put together a simple wreath (I believe the key was to put it together while it was hanging on the wall, that way you can see how is coming together!). Sunniva also taught us the key to getting the most from our Amaryllis, not only can it look beautiful in a vase but if you use a clear vase and cut a cross at the end of the stem, the stem curls to produce an attractive feature in its own right! Sunniva suggested any budding flower arrangers should check out the flower market in Smithfield, which is good advice with the current economy!

I would to say thank you to Sunniva for such an entertaining evening and for donating all the flower arrangements she put together on the night. I am already looking forward to next year!
Sian U.E. Counihan, LARA Secretary.

The Annual Dinner
LARA’s Annual Dinner held in the Courtyard restaurant in Donnybrook was a great success again this year. Many thanks to all those involved in the organising a great night and also to those who travelled great distances to attend.

The attendees at the 2008 LARA AGM.
Our evening began with pre–dinner drinks before sitting for our first AGM professional photograph, thank to Jenny Matthews (Class of 1999). Before dinner President Gwenda McInerney reported on the events of the year; the successful outing in early September to the complete Hugh Lane collection, which raised funds for the Irish Heart Foundation; the upcoming Flower Demonstration, which is taking place in Loreto Hall on Wednesday the 19th of November, this too will raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation, LARA’s charity of the year. LARA’s hugely enjoyable Golf outing is set to take place in Mullingar in 2009. Gwenda then charged all LARA members to propose ideas for outings and events for the upcoming year. All suggestions are welcome and can be emailed to info@laraireland.com.

Vicki Lamb our finance officer distributed income and expenditure accounts for the year, showing a very healthy LARA balance. This raised a proposal from the floor to increase the donation given to Sr. Orla Tracey, who is doing wonderful work founding a Loreto Girls School in Rumbek, Sudan. A proposal that the original donation of €500 be raised to €2000 was put and carried unanimously by all present.
We had an excellent meal which was in no way hampered by the official proceedings of the evening. The conversation flowed with friends catching up as only Abbey girls can do. A wonderful evening was had by all.
TopSr. Orla Treacy thanks LARA
Sr. Orla Treacy has written to LARA to thank us for our donation of €500 in January. Sr. Orla is currently in Maka Kuei, Rumbek, Sudan setting up a secondary school for girls. They spent the money last week on school books, boarding school equipment, uniforms and the essentials to start a boarding school. Our secondary school for girls though gone has enabled another to begin!
